About Robert

Robert W. Mixon, Jr. has led at the highest levels of both military and corporate life — and spent the last decade helping organizations build the kind of cultures that hold together when conditions get hard.

A West Point graduate (elected Class President) and retired U.S. Army Major General, Robert served his country for more than 33 years, commanding the 7th Infantry Division and Division West of First Army. He also served as Deputy Executive Assistant to General Colin Powell, then Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. Before leaving active duty, he led Army Task Force Modularity, an integrated team of military and civilian experts charged with redesigning the Army's force structure while at war. The mission was accomplished in under a year, producing battlefield formations that shaped U.S. operations in both Iraq and Afghanistan.

When Robert retired from the Army in 2007, he didn't step back from the pressure of leadership; he stepped into it from a different angle. As President of Magnatag Visible Systems, he guided the company through the worst economic downturn since the Great Depression. He then served as Executive Vice President of CDS Monarch, a large not-for-profit where his team provided life and career transition services for more than 1,500 people with developmental disabilities, and where he helped found the Warrior Salute Program for veterans with PTSD and TBI.

In 2014, Robert co-founded Level Five Associates, bringing together everything he had learned about building cultures of commitment and putting it to work in boardrooms, leadership retreats, and executive coaching engagements across the country. He serves as a faculty member at the Thayer Leader Development Group at West Point, and at premier business schools including the Olin Business School at Washington University in St. Louis and the Cox Business School at Southern Methodist University, where he received a Teaching Excellence Award.

His mission: to develop cultures defined by trust, commitment, and empowerment and to equip the leaders who make them possible.

Leadership Expertise and Executive Coaching

Keynote Topics on Adaptive Leadership include:
Leading Through the Chaos We’re Facing: Learn how to build strong cultures by mastering the skills that matter most when conditions change, leading clearly, decisively, and under pressure.

Every organization faces moments when the plan doesn't hold and the pressure is on. The leaders who carry their teams through those moments aren't just capable, they're committed. In this keynote, Robert draws on 33 years of high-stakes military command and more than a decade of corporate executive experience to show audiences what adaptive leadership looks like in practice: how to stay clear on direction when circumstances shift, how to build the culture that holds people together when it gets hard, and how to lead in a way that earns the kind of commitment that doesn't waver.
Building a Culture Where Everyone is All In: Create an organizational environment where everyone belongs to a Culture of Commitment.

Most leaders know what a great culture looks like. Fewer know how to build one deliberately or how to diagnose why the one they have isn't performing the way they need it to. This keynote takes audiences through Robert's Level Five Culture of Commitment framework, exploring the five distinct culture levels that exist in every organization and the specific leadership behaviors that move people from compliance to genuine commitment. Audiences leave with a clear picture of where their organization stands and a concrete path forward.

Enterprise Strategy Design: From Vision to Execution: Master the planning process to create effective organizational strategies that drive measurable results.

Having a strategy and having a strategy your team believes in and executes are two entirely different things. Robert's approach to enterprise strategy design, refined over decades in the Army and in the corporate world, closes that gap. This keynote focuses on the practical mechanics of building a strategy that is clearly understood at every level, operationally sound, and owned by the people responsible for executing it. It is particularly well-suited for leadership teams navigating significant change, competitive pressure, or a gap between ambition and results.
Employing The Big 6 Leadership Principles: Set the Azimuth, Listen, Trust and Empower, Do the Right Thing, When in Charge Take Charge, and Balance.

The Big 6 aren't theories. They're principles that have been tested at every level of leadership Robert has held, from Army platoon to division command to corporate C-suite. This keynote introduces each principle in the context of the real leadership challenges audiences face, making clear why each one matters and what it looks like to put it into practice. Leaders walk away with a framework they can apply immediately and teach to the people they lead.
Transformational Leadership in Transformative Times: Learn proven values-based leadership principles tested in both military and corporate environments.

Times of disruption have a way of revealing whether an organization's leadership is real or merely comfortable. This keynote examines what it takes to lead through genuine transformation. This is not just change management, but the kind of adaptive, values-based leadership that holds an organization's culture intact while everything around it shifts. Robert brings perspective from both sides of that equation: as a military commander who redesigned Army formations in the middle of a war, and as a corporate executive who guided a company through the 2008 financial crisis.

Speaking Engagements

Robert has addressed audiences across corporate, manufacturing, not-for-profit, government, and military sectors. His work is particularly resonant for C-suite and senior leadership teams, high-potential leader cohorts, industry associations, and organizations in the middle of a culture shift, a strategic transition, or a period of significant growth or disruption.

He brings the same principle to the stage that he brings to every coaching engagement: the people in the room are capable of more than they currently believe. The job of a great speaker, like the job of a great leader, is to show you why that's true and give you the tools to prove it.

Available Formats

Robert is available for keynote addresses, half-day and full-day leadership workshops, multi-session workshop series for senior leadership teams, and executive coaching engagements. He has taught in intimate executive education settings at West Point and at major business schools, and delivered programs to leadership teams ranging from 40 to 30,000 people.
